How do I make my own backdrop?

To make your own backdrop you don’t need a 40 foot canvas or a team of scenic artists. You can use whatever you have at home. Plain paper, newspaper, a flattened box, or even an old sheet, can all be turned into the perfect base for your backdrop. Attach your base to a wall to work vertically like our scenic artists.

Our scenic artists use oil or acrylic paint, but you can use whatever medium you like best. Why not create a scene from your favourite play or book? Or somewhere you’ve always dreamed of going? Maybe your backdrop could be somewhere that only exists in your imagination?

To inspire you, here are some examples of some our favourite backdrops and set designs from past Bristol Old Vic productions:

Good luck making your own backdrops, we’d love to see them!
