About The Competition: What Do I Do?
The competition asked entrants to create a costume design for one of the following characters:
- Long John Silver from Treasure Island
- Cinderella from Cinderella
- Toad from The Adventures of Mr Toad
- Titania from A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Feel free to put your own spin on the character and production, for example, A Midsummer Night’s Dream set at a music festival, Cinderella reimagined in contemporary Bristol, The Adventure of Mr Toad transformed into a hip-hop musical, Treasure Island staged on the SS Great Britain and so on. Use your imagination, what costumes would you want to see…
To help you get started, have a look at the short descriptions of the characters we've written. All these characters have appeared at Bristol Old Vic over the years and you can see some of the ways they've been costumed on our stage below:
In a faraway kingdom, Cinderella lives happily with her mother and father until her mother dies. Cinderella's father remarries a cold cruel woman, with vile daughters, who force her to become a servant in her own house. A chance for Cinderella to escape finally arrives when the King invites every eligible woman in the kingdom to a ball, where his son will choose his bride. Cinderella doesn’t have a dress for the ball, but she does have a Fairy Godmother waiting in the wings with some magical tricks up her sleeve. Add in a pumpkin carriage, the stroke of midnight, a lost glass slipper, and the rest, as they say, is fairy tale history.
Toad is the wealthy owner and occupant of Toad Hall. Toad is inventive and resourceful but he is also selfish and completely lacks any common sense. His vast wealth means he can constantly take up new hobbies, including punting and hot air ballooning. One new hobby, racing motor cars, ultimately spells trouble for Toad and lands him in prison. Rumour has it he is plotting a daring escape involving a cunning disguise and some help from his friends…
Long John Silver
Long John Silver is the main villain in Treasure Island. First introduced as the friendly sea-cook on board the Hispaniola, Long John Silver soon turns out to be a notorious pirate who is plotting a mutiny against the ship’s captain. Silver has a parrot, named Captain Flint, who perches on his shoulder and squawks pirate phrases like "Pieces of Eight", and "Stand by to go about". He won’t tell anyone how he lost his leg, but it is whispered it involved a thrilling sea-battle.
Titania is queen of the fairies. She is strong-willed and fierce, and every bit as powerful as her husband Oberon. Titania and Oberon are engaged in an argument and she is refusing to leave the enchanted woods on the edges of Athens. Due to an enchantment cast by Oberon's servant Puck, Titania magically falls in love with a weaver named Nick Bottom, who has been given the head of a donkey by Puck.
The competition was judged by costume designer Katie Sykes. Katie designed the costumes for A Monster Calls and Jane Eyre at Bristol Old Vic. Entrants were divided into three age groups (4 – 7 years of age, 8 – 12 years and age, and 13 - 16 years of age) and a winner was picked from each.
We've teamed up with the talented costume students at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, who are working with our winning designers to turn their drawings into reality. The real-life costumes will be displayed at Bristol Old Vic, and we'll put pictures up here too! Well done, everyone!
