We’re passionate about providing opportunities and support to writers at a variety of points in their career. We work primarily with writers from the South West region, developing skills, forging creative collaborations, identifying commissioning opportunities, and taking work into production.
We also commission new work from national and international writers, and advise on new works, adaptations, classics for the theatre's varied artistic programme.
Submit your new play or musical
Each year, we call out to Writers in the West Country via The Open Session.
For one month, plays and musicals can be submitted, with writers of the Top 5 becoming our next ‘Open Session Five’. Across a year they experience: workshops to explore and showcase their script with actors and directors; sessions from industry experts; dramaturgical support; and opportunities brought to Bristol Old Vic from other organisations.
Unfortunately we don’t accept unsolicited scripts outside of The Open Session’s month-long window.
Find out more about 'The Open Session' here.

Courses & Events
We run skills courses, and host events connecting local writers with organisers of national writing competitions. Sign up to our e-newsletter to find out more.
The Literary Department is supported by The Ronald Duncan Literary Foundation.
Ronald Duncan was a poet, playwright, and librettist, who had international success, and was based for much of his life in Devon. The Foundation’s support enables us to commission and produce writers’ work, find new plays (via The Open Session), and nurture skills and career development for West Country writers.
