In the Light Everything is Brighter | Meet Elinor

22 Jun 2018

With their debut show on the horizon, we're getting to know each of the 12-strong company who make up this year's Made in Bristol company, WILDERBEAST. Next up, Elinor Lower!

Tell us a little about yourself and how you made it into this year’s Made in Bristol company.
I moved to Bristol to do an English degree in 2013 and just stuck around after I graduated. While I was studying I did a writing programme in association with Bristol Old Vic’s Literary Department, which was my first interaction with the theatre here. I’ve also been working on Front of House at Bristol Old Vic since March 2017. I knew a few people who were auditioning for Made in Bristol and thought it sounded great, and here we are!

What’s been your top moment of Made in Bristol so far?
It’s so hard to choose, everything we’ve been doing has been so new to me that it’s all seemed so exciting. I think for me it’s been a series of gradual moments of realising that we’re really transforming from a collective of near-strangers into a company of makers. The stuff that has been the most challenging has been the most rewarding; finishing Ice Ice Baby, choosing our company name, all of that stuff.

What does WILDERBEAST mean to you?
I think it balances the sense of playful silliness and wilfulness that’s definitely always present in the room with us. WILDERBEAST was born from a load of things, but for it to have partially stemmed from a spelling mistake makes me laugh.

Is there anything exciting you can reveal about this year’s show?
We’ve been making some really strange stuff in the room-- I’m looking forward to seeing which things make it to the stage. We’re so lucky to be such a multi-disciplinary group and I think the show will be an exciting exploration of some really cool, human stuff in a way that uses all of that.

What are you looking forward to on completion of the course?
I’m looking forward to us all taking our next steps as both individuals and as a company. I’m ready to be the supportive aunt to all my fellow MIB-ers going off to drama school and other pastures new, and to find my own rambly way into what I want to do next (writing? making? who knows!). Plus, we’ll have sent this strange theatrical baby out into the world. Exciting!

Give us a quick fun-fact about yourself!
I’ve never quite mastered telling the time on an analogue clock. My child-self has a lot to answer for.

This year's Made in Bristol company return to 1532 Performing Arts Centre to present their visceral new show 18–21 July. For more information and to book tickets, click here.
