Love Letter
Dated: 16 October 1843
James Chute and Mazarina Macready met soon after Mazarina’s acting debut, and they eloped in October 1844.
This love letter from 1843 predates their marriage but shows how much Mazarina and Bristol meant to James. On his way to Ireland, James writes: “… we had the wind dead ahead the whole way – oh: how I envied it as it was going to the place I had left – whence I had been so happy, and where I still wished to be.”
The couple lived together in Queen Square, and James took over management of the Theatre when Mazarina’s mother, Sarah, died.
