Ferment Fortnight Preview | Jessie's Tattoo Club

21 Jan 2019

Ferment Fortnight returns to its rightful Studio home this January! Here, Lucy Rivers of Gagglebabble gives us an inside look at their upcoming sharing Jessie's Tattoo Club. Catch it Wed 23 Jan.

Tell us a bit about yourself…
I'm a writer, composer and performer based in Cardiff and co-founded Gagglebabble with Hannah McPake in 2013 after the success of our first show The Bloody Ballad. We like to make genre-breaking, exciting, Gig-Theatre and are drawn to darker stories which have strong female protagonists. Jessie's Tattoo Club will be our sixth production and is made in collaboration with director Titas Halder who also directed our critically acclaimed show Sinners Club.

What are you presenting at Ferment Fortnight?
We will present songs and snippets of a brand new show in development called Jessie's Tattoo Club.

What inspired/influenced your piece?
Our main inspiration for the show comes from the incredible trailblazing life, art and poems of Jessie Knight, the UK's first female Tattoo artist. We are also influenced by iconic female singer-songwriters including Patti Smith, Janis Joplin, Nina Simone and Joni Mitchell, as well as the rich history and world of tattooing.

What does the work that Ferment do mean to you?
It's the first time I've presented something at Ferment but always found it an exciting festival where you can see all sorts of new work at various stages in development. It's fantastic to have the opportunity and support from Bristol Old Vic for us to try out our new ideas in front of an audience at this early stage, and to have the beautiful Weston Studio to do it in.

What would you say the audience can expect in three words?
Skin-digging
Songs
Heart
