Young Ferment Preview | MACK.

6 Apr 2018

Ahead of Young Ferment opening next week, we caught up with the cast of MACK. as they prepare to perform their new musical about a hard-headed, no-nonsense gangster.

MACK. (a short musical) is one of the most interesting and funniest pieces of work I’ve ever been a part of. A story about a violent gangster who has his life turned upside down after a horrific accident. He is forced to change his ways after he is given what seems to be a miracle. Despite all the chaos, there is one simple and meaningful message behind the madness.

Rehearsals are always one of the highlights of my day and I always enjoy coming to work alongside my peers on this amazing script. Working on a piece that has been written and directed by them is an odd and entertaining experience, but is also one that I would never change. Being able to work even closer with the directors and becoming a part of the process is definitely going to be one of my most memorable times at Bristol Old Vic. As a cast, we’ve been left to our own devices to create our own personal characters – opting for a variety of comedic and mysterious traits.

Will Want (writer of MACK.) has created a composition of music that intertwines perfectly with the mood, tone and style. After reading the first draft I was instantly hooked and looked forward to working with the ensemble. We’ve ranged from being patients with strange and peculiar illness’ to some of the coolest cats in town. Written and performed in a slapstick style with Brecht, Pinter and Beckett undertones; at this stage, MACK. Is becoming an interesting, fast-paced and comedic show, escalating quickly to a surprising climax.
