Beyond Face presents an evening showcasing fresh new early-stage work from exciting global majority artists based in Bristol and the surrounding areas.
We are Here to Share is Beyond Face’s regular scratch night programme. It’s a platform for global majority artists to share their work at different stages of development and an opportunity for audiences to experience new work and offer feedback.
Featuring the work of Beyond Face’s Associate Artists Lau Batty and Rozelle Gemma alongside other local artists, the evening will feature new writing exploring urgent themes and thought provoking subject matter.
Each piece will be at different stages of its development. Come along, support and celebrate the creativity and new work of diverse local artists.
Meet the artists:
Lau Batty – How To Grieve Correctly in A Tuvaluan Household with Other Oceanic References
How To Grieve Correctly in a Tuvaluan Household with Other Oceanic References explores unresolved grief that Lau and her community are facing due to the loss of land, family and way of life in Tuvalu. The play is a love letter to the Pasifika women in Lau’s life and also a call for solidarity between all occupied peoples.
Rozelle Gemma – No Woman is an Island
No Woman is an Island is an autobiographical play based on Roz’s time on the TV show The Island with Bear Grylls. Interweaving island life with other moments in Roz’s life, it touches on topics such as bullying, addiction and identity.
Nia Bimkubwa - How You Come Over?
A woman comes to the realisation of how a childhood memory triggered emotions that formed beliefs that shaped her life.
Nia Bimkubwa (formerly known as Vanessa Melody) is a soulful, inspirational Bristol-based performer. As singer/songwriter, poet and actor with a deep love for her Afro-Caribbean heritage, her work is embellished with the essence of her roots and culture. A natural woman that draws on themes from personal experiences that call for introspection, elevation and celebration of the human spirit.
Maya Pillay - Lilith before Eve
In a privileged circle that prides itself on progress, an accusation shatters the surface. As whispers ripple through the group, ‘believe women’ is tested, not in principle, but in practice. A drama about consent, complicity, and the quiet violence of allegiance.
The night after an engagement party, Sophie accuses her partner Jack of rape. He’s charming, progressive, and well-loved — a rising star in ethical tech. She’s new to the group, not from the same world. As the story spreads, believe women starts to fracture. What happens when the man accused is one of your own?
