Young Artists Showcase (previously Young Ferment) brings together the next generation of theatre-makers from Young SixSix and Young Company to develop bold new ideas for the stage, in collaboration with Bristol Old Vic’s Artist Development team.
Mentored by Maddie Wakeling, Xahnaa Adlam, Kira McGuinness, and a range of guest artists, the programme supports writers, composers, directors and devisors from Young Company and Young SixSix to create four original 20-minute pieces.
This year’s showcase presents…
Cernunnos
By Seb Stevens & Isaac Reeves
“Cernunnos, Horned One
Cernunnos, King of the Sun
Hunter and Hunted
Stag God of the Earth"
Climate change, war, fascism, consumerism - the modern world is full of fear and confusion.
Amidst the noise, a group of young misfits hear a drumbeat; an ancient rhythm, calling them to remember.
They reckon with what it means to be British and what it means to belong, as Cernunnos, the Celtic god of wilderness, leads them on a dance through the forest of time.
Generational
By Laurentine Kamga
Our parents, they carry a lot with them, so much that they unconsciously pass what they carry to us.
The future. So what happens when that same future has to face old baggage from past generations? Do they buckle under the pressures of their families? Or do they find a way to move on and finally heal their inner child?
Generational embarks on a journey through childhood, family pressures, growing up, and the challenges passed down from generation to generation with the hope that one day, those chains holding us back from growth will finally be broken.
Only then can the future finally heal.
Humane
By Orian Dove & Isabella Bennetta
Humane is set on a dystopian farm, exploring themes of community, metamorphosis, humanity and entrapment. Following the mundanity of life on The Farm for its inhabitants, and their need to escape the ritual of disenfranchisement they experience, Humane presents an ensemble, movement focused story of a community trying to escape and regain their humanity, only to realise the extent of their captivity.
Only The Camera Knows
By Bella Salisbury & Lola Fyson
Jane’s friends are helping her move her stuff into the attic before they leave for uni the next morning. While looking through old dusty boxes, they stumble across an old film camera that Jane has never seen before. But half the film has already been used…
Sparking the girls’ interest, they embark on a glitter-filled, feather bower-packed, crazy photo shoot to finish the film reel. But among fancy dress boxes and Christmas tree decorations lurks a more sinister feeling among the girls as they question what secrets the camera contains. Will they let the presence of the unknown come between them? Or admit the deeper fear that lies within? Only the camera knows…
