Theatre designer John Elvery’s beautiful costume designs are available to view at the Theatre Collection.
His designs for Bristol Old Vic’s 1987 production of The Adventures of Mr Toad include fabric swatches, meaning we know exactly which materials were used to make them.
As many theatre costumes are reused, looking at designs is one of the only ways to tell what actors wore for specific performances.
John was Bristol Old Vic’s Head of Design from 1972 to 1986, and is remembered for his committed attention to period detail and his imaginative pantomime costumes.
