The National Trust's Enquiry

Circa: February 1942

After the Theatre was sold to an anonymous buyer, the National Trust wrote to H.W. Maxwell of the Bristol Museum & Art Gallery in February 1942, asking whether the buyer would be interested in giving the Theatre to them to preserve it for perpetuity.

They note the Theatre's significance as "a building of such a unique character" and that its survival would be "for the benefit of the nation". Whilst ownership of the Theatre didn’t transfer to them, we're proud to discover that the Theatre’s historic value was as widely-recognised then as it is now.
