My Robot Heart by Molly Naylor and the Middle Ones

My Robot Heart is a new show written and devised by Molly Naylor. It combines storytelling, post-dramatic theatre, live music and autobiography. Molly began writing the three intertwining stories that make up the show around two years ago. Each story relates to love and fear.

I'm Grace, one half of The Middle Ones - a band who are working with Molly to develop the show.

We first met Molly when we all lived in Norwich. We cut our teeth at the same events - Molly was reading her poetry, and we were working out how to sing and play together. It's very exciting to share the same stage again.

In 2010 we recorded a song for Molly's first show Whenever I Get Blown Up I Think Of You. Molly then asked us to record more songs for My Robot Heart. As time went on we realised that playing the music live, and potentially interacting with Molly on stage could add some extra magic.

We had no idea whether this idea would be successful until we presented some scratch performances of the show at Battersea Arts Centre in December. It seems to be going well so far!

We're incredibly excited to be working at Bristol Old Vic during Ferment to further develop the piece. We'll be refining the script, experimenting with staging and working on further integration of the different elements, artforms, characters and (non)actors.

We would love to know your thoughts on this work-in-progress performance. Come and see us on the 17th January at 8pm, and give us your feedback on our progress.
