Bristol Old Vic in the music scene

How long has Bristol Old Vic been hosting music?

Music has been an essential element of this theatre from its opening night.  In fact, when the theatre opened way back on 30th May 1766, the show was described as ‘A Concert of Musick’.  This was done to get around the 1737 Licensing Act, which meant that it was actually illegal to put on plays here!

Since then, the music performed here has reflected the music scene of the city.  In the 1830s and 1840s many classical musicians played on our stage, including Niccolò Paganini.  Paganini was a violin virtuoso, famous for his extraordinary talent and theatrical style.

By the 1920s our audiences came to see music hall performances, as the vaudeville style grew in popularity.  Vaudeville combined music with comedy and could include all sorts of acts from poetry, to magic, to acrobatics!

Our music connections continue offstage.  The story goes that even The Beatles were influenced by Bristol Old Vic.  Paul MacCartney was visiting Jane Asher, his partner who was performing here. He apparently noticed the name of the hat shop next door - Rigby & Evens’ Warehouse.  Thus, Eleanor Rigby got her surname.

Now, Bristol Old Vic is a venue for a huge variety of music related events – reflecting the diversity of people and genres in Bristol.

Our theatre has been part of Bristol’s music scene for hundreds of years.  And we are planning to become even more involved with our city’s thriving music culture!
