New exhibition launches at Bristol Old Vic

11 Sep 2025

Bristol Old Vic has been running free exhibitions in its lower pit passageway since the 250th Anniversary refurbishment in 2016 - we've looked at children in theatre, the history of costume, food and drink, Christmas shows and community - you name it, we've covered it.

The latest is called We Are Bristol Old Vic - we hope you can spend a few minutes taking a look next time you're here!

Earliest drawing of the theatre

Whether it's the 1st or the 100th time you've visited Bristol Old Vic, this is your theatre. Every person who has walked through the doors is part of our history, stretching back to 1766.

We Are Bristol Old Vic is an exhibition celebrating the people who make our theatre; featuring props, interview and archeological finds, amongst facsimiles from the University of Bristol Theatre Collection and Bristol Archives.

Curating this exhibition has been a great opportunity to delve into the history of our unique theatre and spotlight some people who aren't normally centre stage.

Heritage Participation Producer, Hatty Welsh said:

"When I dug into the history of this theatre, I begin to get sense of its place in Bristol's social history. It has stood on the same spot since 1766 and in that time, it has seen countless people pass through. Lots of them are all but lost to history, but there are traces of the time they spent here. The idea of this exhibition was to celebrate all the lives shared with this theatre, from the people who have spent most of their working lives here, to those who just popped in to use the toilet!"
