Choir Boy: What Are the Songs That Take You Home?

1 Aug 2023

Artistic Director Nancy Medina's first show Choir Boy premieres at Bristol Old Vic in Oct.

We've been inspired by the play's celebration of music and its power to move us - and we're inviting Bristol to join in!

We can't do it without you!

We're asking people to share the one special song that takes them home.

  • What is the track that connects you to the generation that went before? Is it the Calypso hymns of your grandparents, or the Beatles track your dad played on repeat?
  • What song transports you back to a special person or place?
  • What's the music that matters to you and gives you that sense of belonging to those who went before you?

We'd love to know and celebrate that with you.

Just send the song title and artist (if you have it) and we'll create a playlist from these musical memories to run at Bristol Old Vic throughout the run of Choir Boy.

To contribute a song, just complete the form!

To start you off, we asked the team at BOV towers for their special songs and have made a mini playlist for you to get inspired..

1) Good Vibrations  - The Beach Boys
"We had two albums we used to listen to in the car that we would allow my dad to listen to! We'd play it on holiday trips. Reminds me of being cramped in the back with my two sisters in our shell-suits on the way to Somerset at stupid o'clock in the morning!"

2) Wanna Be Starting Something - Michael Jackson
"Dancing around the bedroom with my sister at 3am just before going on holiday and mum shouting at us to get some sleep."

3) Mr Blue Sky - ELO
"This is my Dad's favourite song"

4) Sunshine - Gabrielle
"
My mum used to play this on repeat - I heard it the other day, for the first time in 20yrs, and it gave me goosebumps!"

5) King of the Mountain - Kate Bush
"My dad played it non-stop on a family holiday we went on in France"

6) Here Comes the Sun - The Beatles
"Reminds me of holidays with my dad"

7) Fire and Rain - James Taylor
"This always reminds me of my mum"

8) Don't Let Go - En Vogue
"My dad had the record and we used to blast it when we visited his flat growing up"

9) Our House - Madness
"It's one of those songs that was always on and felt like it was about or family. Dad always tells me how he met Suggs in a pub early in their career."

10) Reach Out I'll Be There - The Four Tops
"Reminds me of dancing with my mum"

Listen to the tunes and check out the playlist!
