Up The Feeder | memories of Bristol

This time last year, our 100+ strong community production Orpheus & Eurydice was in the final stages of rehearsals. Orpheus & Eurydice was the largest community production we’ve done in over 20 years. Nearly 2,000 people from across Bristol came to see the show over four performances in August 2023.

Productions that engage the entire community always strike a chord with the performers and audiences. We love an ambitious production that harnesses the might of Bristol and the stories that make us who we are.

Programme, 2001 production

In 1999, Bristol Old Vic told the story of the rise and fall of Bristol Docks with ACH Smith’s Up the Feeder, Down the 'Mouth and Back Again. It had a phenomenal response from Bristol audiences.

So much so that in 2001 it returned but this time set on Bristol’s harbourside, involving a core of professional actors, over 60 people from across the city, Young Company, trains, cranes and a 250ft ship, the show has entered Bristol legend.

We were lucky enough to sit down with director Andy Hay and writer ACH Smith who were responsible for bringing the history of Bristol's docks to life 25 years ago...
