About the Term
This term will present a unique opportunity to be part of the creation of a new piece of work and understand how, as artists, we might deconstruct classic material in ways that take us to unexpected and strange places.
Across this term we will work to research and develop a new production adapted from a classic text (TBC). We will use devising as a foundation to develop and interrogate characters, dramaturgy and world building. There will be a particular focus on the construction of visual images, dance theatre, narrative journey and meta-theatre. Get ready to think, sweat and create pockets of exciting and difficult work.
There may be sessions where additional creatives join sessions to work with the group, including composers, writers and choreographers.
Spring term includes a group performance, as part of the Springboard showcase.
Adult Company Director: Maisie Newman
Maisie is an award-winning director, writer, and choreographer from Easton, Bristol. Her work is driven by a deep focus on human experience and the relationships between people, on both micro and macro levels. Centering the politics of class and queerness, Maisie works across music, movement, design, and space to build multi-layered worlds that stretch a piece to the very edge of its reality.
She is currently adapting and directing Animal Farm for Bristol School of Acting (titled A Fairy Story), as well as directing Trust by Falk Richter for Rose Bruford College (Acting BA). She was The Bryan Forbes bursary director at the National Youth Theatre, adapting and directing Bakkhai in 2023; A Headlong Origins director across 2019-2020, workshopping Rechnitz (Elfriede Jelinek); Creative fellow at UCL in 2020; and Interim Young Company director at Bristol Old Vic in 2019, directing Antigone.
