This session will explore both the joys and the challenges of company-building: developing a clear artistic voice, navigating funding and partnerships, managing setbacks, and staying resilient through uncertain moments. Alongside practical advice, Alix will reflect on the personal lessons learned along the way and offer guidance for artists hoping to start their own companies.

Beyond Face was founded in 2015 by Artistic Director & CEO Alix Harris in Plymouth. The company was formed to address the lack of representation of Global Majority people participating in theatre in the city.
The company has been expanding its work for over a decade and has worked nationally and internationally with the ambition to amplify the region as a place where Global Majority people are making and engaging in high quality artistic work. Beyond Face have produced 10 new writing productions and in 2021 rebranded as a South West based organisation in order to connect with more artists and audiences across the region. In 2023 Beyond Face joined the Arts Council’s National Portfolio, which gave stability to deepen our offerings.
