It’s a hard time to think ambitiously as a writer for the stage, yet people say that’s what they want from us: to think big, to allow our imaginations to run free.
How do we reconcile our own ambitions with the demands of the creative industries, and face down all the reasons there might be not to write, to speak up, to tell the stories we want to tell?
This half-day workshop explores:
– the tensions between what you want to write, and what you might feel you’re expected to write.
– creative resilience, including how you talk about your work; how you might just come to love rewrites, notes, and collaboration, without erasing your vision as a writer.
– how to keep caring about your own projects, even when no-one else seems to.
We’ll also ask questions about several common provocations – including the dreaded ‘why this story, now?’ – and look at how they might be made useful not just for the industry, but for the artist.
Timothy X Atack is a multi-award-winning writer for stage, screen, audio and books. He won the Bruntwood Prize for playwriting in 2017 and his queer sci-fi heartbreaker, DELAY, opens in the Weston Studio in June 2025.
Using DELAY and other projects as case studies, this will be a practical half-day workshop for writers (sharing any results during the session is entirely optional.) It will focus on writing for theatre and performance, but with exercises and ideas that might be applied to any kind of dramatic writing.
Please note this workshop will be taking place at Waterside 1, The Watershed, BS1 5TX
