Outlier
Powerful poetics and soaring music“The sky was painfully big, but our worlds were small, our lives little. So when we found each other in the muddle of it all, that feeling of belonging was addictive.”
Mal, Ama, Lewis and Oskar have grown up together; hedonistically charging through life in rural Devon. Living from party to party, they're railing against the stories that have been written for them as they stand at the precipice of adulthood. But all the space can be suffocating, and it’s tough sometimes – feeling so low in a place so beautiful.
The powerful poetics of Malaika Kegode and soaring music of Bristol band Jakabol combine in this autobiographical gig-theatre show directed by Jenny Davies.
Genre-defying and emotional, Outlier explores the impact of isolation, addiction and friendship on young people in the often-forgotten places.
Made possible thanks to public funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

Outlier’s journey to the stage began as part of Bristol Old Vic’s Ferment Fortnight in the Weston Studio in Feb 2020. It was commissioned and further developed during lockdown by an incredible creative team of independent artists, with the support of the Ferment team.
Outlier will finally have its premiere in the Theatre on our biggest stage this June, co-produced with Ferment as both an in-person and live-broadcast event, so this powerful production and incredibly talented South West team can reach audiences in Bristol and beyond.

FAQ – LIVE BROADCAST
How does it work? Outlier’s live broadcast is powered by TicketCo. Once you purchase a ticket, you’ll be sent a unique code which is what you’ll use to access the broadcast on the night.
How to watch? On the evening of the performance you’ve purchased, click the link in your confirmation email and you’ll be taken to the broadcast. Input your unique code if it asks for it. You are limited to watching the broadcast on one device only, so don’t share your code or you might find you can’t watch the show.
How to watch on my TV? Download the TicketCo app, which is on many Smart TV app stores, on Apple TV, Android TV and Fire TV. With the TV app, input your unique code and the stream will start playing. Or, start playing the stream on your phone or tablet and then cast the show to your TV using AirPlay or Chromecast. Or, plug your laptop into your TV using an HDMI cable.
FAQ – IN PERSON
See it safely: Find all the details on how your visit will work and all the measures we’ve put in place to keep you safe here. Note that audience numbers will be reduced and social distancing will apply for these performances.
When shall I arrive? Please arrive at least 30 minutes before the show starts. This is to allow us time to seat everyone in the auditorium safely. We will not be accepting latecomers.
What if the show sells out? With reduced capacity, many of our shows sell out fast. If the show sells out, email our Box Office to be added to the waiting list.
What happens at the Live Broadcast performances? The shows on Thu 24 and Fri 25 Jun will be live broadcast for people to watch at home as well, so they’ll be a little different to a usual theatre experience. A broadcast team and cameras will be following the action; they'll be in the auditorium and they might be on stage – a bit like being at a festival. Please note that audiences may be filmed.
