Peru: Pleasure and Pain
A chance meeting between two British Alpinists in Chamonix back in 1984, led to them climbing together in the French Alps. It turned out that both Joe Simpson and Simon Yates harboured ambitions to make new climbs on the world’s highest peaks. The following year, they travelled to a mountain in Peru called Siula Grande. Events did not quite go to plan – the climb and descent developed into an infamous mountaineering epic. The resulting book, film and now play, Touching the Void, are testament to the continuing public fascination with the story.
Since the events of 1985, Simon has returned to Peru’s Cordillera Huayhuash three times to climb, work on the film and to complete the circular trek around this spectacular mountain range.
Peru: Pleasure and Pain has been specially prepared for Bristol Old Vic. In the presentation, Simon will recall the Siula Grande epic and his return to attempt the nearby peak of Siula Chico in 1996. His subsequent visits see Simon entering the bizarre world of movies and witnessing his best ever mountain sunset while circumnavigating the range. Illustrated with unique images, this talk also offers a beautiful overview of the Cordillera Huayhuash in the Peruvian Andes.
