What would a revolution look like in 2022?
Marking their 25th Anniversary, British African heritage contemporary theatre company tiata fahodzi presents three back-to-back half-hour world premieres from three of the most exciting voices in British theatre.
This October, writers Diana Nneka Atuona, babirye bukilwa and Malaika Kegode respond to the moment we find ourselves in with their own versions of revolution – unvarnished, honest and raw.
Co-directed by tiata fahodzi’s Artistic Director Chinonyerem Odimba (Black Love, Medea) and Campbell X (Stud Life, My White Best Friend), the plays are presented by tiata fahodzi as part of their 25th Birthday season.
The UK’s leading British African heritage contemporary theatre company, tiata fahodzi is funded by Arts Council England. To find out more about about #tiatafahodzi25, visit tiatafahodzi.com.
About the plays
Rot
Malaika Kegode
“Rot is the story of two very lonely young people who fall into the wrong kind of comfort. I wanted to talk about how loneliness can push us into the wrong kind of revolutions, can push us to places where our loneliness is just exacerbated and the negative things we feel about ourselves are also exacerbated.
And I wanted to talk about how ugly revolution could be. It’s not just a beautiful powerful thing, often it comes from a place of anger, unrest, dissatisfaction with your life and the way things are going. There’s so many different reasons why people feel that way, and that’s why I wanted to write Rot.”
'Stark, touching, witty... it is nothing short of brilliant'

Changing Rooms
Diana Nneka Atuona
“Changing Rooms is a play about a transgender woman who is asked to leave the female changing room in a gym. I think it’s a really important topic to discuss, and it’s the first time I’ve dealt with such subject matter so it was really important for me to try and challenge myself, but also to discuss an issue that I feel is actually really important. I think people can expect an honest take on a difficult subject.
I think essentially the best kind of revolution is probably within oneself – the best kind of change is to start with yourself.”
'an impressive play that opens our eyes to Liberia’s past'

616-DAWN
babirye bukilwa
616-DAWN is a radical piece of writing opening up the rage and exhaustion of the Black female experience, as we are thrown into the world of A and B – two Black lesbians who have kidnapped celebrity mogul Kevin West – just as the police begin to descend.
'A total thrill from start to finish'
