The Meaning of Zong FAQs

Why are you moving The Meaning of Zong?

The financial risks associated with potentially losing weeks of rehearsal to Test and Trace is too high for us to cover across a short 3.5-week run.

The impact of Test and Trace means that at any point, half the company might have to isolate for 10 days, interrupting rehearsals, delaying the show’s completion and increasing costs beyond recovery. With infection rates in Bristol approaching 1 in 100 across the population, the risk of harm to our artists and interruption to our business is just too high.

I thought it was safe now?

We know from the government’s Events Research Programme, from our own experience in 2020, and last week’s announcements from UK Theatre, that indoor performances are safe to attend. All safety procedures can be found here.

The show is being postponed because the financial risks associated with potentially losing weeks of rehearsal to Test and Trace is too high for us to cover across a short 3.5-week run.

What about the rest of the theatre’s shows?

The rest of Bristol Old Vic’s programme for Autumn/Winter remains on sale. The theatre’s promise to keep our audiences safe remains strong, with the additional offer of two guaranteed socially distanced performances remaining in place. All safety procedures can be found here.

What if I’ve booked tickets for The Meaning of Zong already?

You will be emailed with alternative dates for your bookings this week. If those dates are not convenient, please contact the Box Office to change them, or to receive a credit note on your account (or a full refund if you prefer).

Can I book for the new dates yet?

Booking for the April 2022 dates of The Meaning of Zong will be possible from 10am on Tue 27 Jul.

Is there a risk of it being cancelled completely?

We are really determined to tell this story at a time when it can be heard by as many people as possible, in the safest way we can. Our commitment to deliver a stunning production of Giles Terera’s play to live audiences in Bristol and all over the world is stronger than ever.

What if there are still risks in April next year?

We are constantly monitoring info from Public Health England and we make changes to our programme accordingly. Wherever possible, productions will be rescheduled.

Will you still have socially distanced performances?

Yes, we will. All details can be found on the show pages on our website.
