The Great Big Story Mix UpThe Theatre on The Downs
A live and interactive improvised storytelling show for children aged 3+ and their families that puts the audience at the centre of the action.
Based around fairy tale tropes and characters, and combining art, music and theatre, The Great Big Story Mix Up is led entirely by audience suggestions and interventions. The show involves genuine live interaction between the performers and the audience, who work together to create never-before-seen fairy tales before your eyes.

Appealing, engaging fun!
Fantastic fun for all the family
The Family Stage
We seek out extraordinary tales, both true and imagined, and tell them with clarity, simplicity, humour and a wild imagination. The theatre we make is for audiences young and old, for anyone who loves play, and for anyone who delights in the communal act of sharing a story.
Roustabout is a Bristol-based company that creates theatre for young and family audiences. Formed after ten years of award-winning creative collaboration and nonsense, we perform in theatres, schools, libraries, festivals, and community venues.
Our first show, Luna – A Play About The Moon, celebrating the 50th anniversary of man landing on the Moon, toured to over 4,000 people, and was described by The Guardian as ‘beguilingly epic’. Our second show, This Island’s Mine, exploring colonialism, land rights, and cultural identity, will tour to schools and theatres once restrictions allow, and is forming the creative stimulus for curriculum initiatives in schools across Bristol and North Somerset. During lockdown we produced our third show, (It’s Not All) Zoom And Gloom, a daft online family comedy written for, rehearsed, and performed entirely on Zoom.
The Great Big Story Mix Up was originally created for Bristol Old Vic, and enjoyed three successful runs in both the Main House and the Studio.
Pay What You Choose
We’ve introduced a flexible pricing scheme for a number of events. Find out more about it here.
- Open Concession – we know these times are extraordinary, so if you don’t have the extra cash right now, don’t worry; book this price range and let us welcome you with open arms.
- Standard – if you can afford to, please book this rate; the extra money you give will support The Theatre on The Downs and the independent artists and companies on its stage, in what is still an incredibly precarious time.
- Pay It Forward – if you’re feeling generous and you have the means, please consider choosing this rate. Each Pay It Forward ticket subsidises two concession tickets, and helps more people experience the delight of watching live theatre.
